Woohoo! I graduated! ….. now what?

Graduation. The light at the end of the tunnel. When I was in high school I couldn’t wait to graduate. It promised the beginning of a new, more exciting era; an era of freedom and purpose and direction. And in many ways that promise came to pass. College was indeed exciting, and direction was plentiful. In fact, my school’s motto for a time was “Live on Purpose.” When they realized how funny that sounded, they changed it to “Find Your Purpose.” No matter which college you go to, it seems that purpose, meaning, and direction are inescapable. What’s my purpose? Find the right job! What’s my meaning? Learning is cool! What’s my direction? Do what you have to do to  graduate!

The thing that most colleges forget to mention is that once you graduate and find the right job, we often end up looking around saying, “Sweet. Now what?”

Don’t get me wrong, it’s really important to find a job that you’re passionate about. It’s really hard to stay motivated to work hard when you can’t stand what you do. But if all we’re living for is our work, life falls really really flat. So what then?

I’ll tell you what, that’s what. True meaning comes from partnering with something that lasts forever. All the work we do here will fade. All the filing, emailing, building, phone calls, cleaning, transactions, all of it is going to fade. As eternal beings (which you are), it’s hard to find real satisfaction doing things we know will ultimately not matter. Thankfully, there are some things that do last forever.

Last night in our young adults gathering, we looked at our identity as co-heirs and collaborators with Christ. When we enter into relationship with Jesus, we become his adopted sons and daughters with full rights of sonship. We essentially inherit the family business. So what is God is the business of doing? What lasts forever? What actually matters? Let’s look at what the Word says.

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun. And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation. So we are Christ’s ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, “Come back to God!” For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.  2 Corinthians 5: 17-21

If you want true meaning in your life, you need to tune your spiritual ears to Holy Spirit so that he can lead you in all the ways he’s reaching out to people for reconciliation. God’s heart is for you, and he wants you to live a full and abundant life, chock full of true meaning and true purpose and true direction.
