Forgiven- Week 3

Sermon Title:

Seeking Forgiveness

Text:

Matthew 5:23-26

Message Notes:
  • See your part.
  • Do your part.
  • Be quick about it.
Deeper Dive:

QUESTION 1 – On a scale of 1-10, with 10 being always, how quick are you to ask for forgiveness? Why is that so?

QUESTION 2 – We looked at three reasons why we struggle to ask for forgiveness: a) we don’t want to appear weak, b) we don’t like admitting we are wrong, c) we are afraid others might reject the apology. Which of these do you resonate with most? Why?

QUESTION 3 – In Matthew 5:23-26 Jesus commands us to seek forgiveness before worshipping. What about this command do you struggle with? What would obeying it require of you?

QUESTION 4 – Do you tend to maximize the flaws in others and minimize your own part? Why? What are some ways you can take ownership for your part of the conflict?

QUESTION 5 – Asking for forgiveness is more that saying “I am sorry.” Which of the following steps for seeking forgiveness do you need to work on? a) admit you did wrong, b) empathize with the pain you caused, c) take responsibility and where possible make restitution, d) apologize and ask for forgiveness, e) forgive yourself.

QUESTION 6 – Jesus’ command is clear: we should be quick about seeking forgiveness. Do you have someone in mind right now that you need to seek forgiveness from? What immediate next steps will you take to seek forgiveness? How can the group pray for and help you?

PRAYER – Pray specifically over the people and situations in which you need to seek forgiveness. Ask for the courage, strength wisdom, and the opportunity to ask for forgiveness.
